This year’s programme presents contemporary and classical chamber music in instrumental and vocal ensembles alike, and the concerts will take place in beautiful settings such as St. Göran Church in Mariehamn, Jomala Church, Kastelholm Castle and Saltvik Church.
This year’s festival theme is “Letters and journeys at sea”, which means that several of the concerts are held in venues along the historic mail route between Eckerö and Vårdö. From Vårdö Katrina sails on even further to Turku via Kumlinge and Lappo. The theme links up with the Turku 2011 culture capital project “Sounding letters – music along the old mail route between Stockholm and Turku”, Katrina being one of the promoters.
Three new works composed by Britta Byström (Sweden), Ella Grüssner Cromwell-Morgan (Åland) and Sebastian Fagerlund (Finland) comprise the musical core of the project, and its “sounding letters” will be travelling from Stockholm to Turku during the summer of 2011, making a pitstop in Åland as well. This year’s programme also features several anniversaries: the town of Mariehamn celebrates its 150th birthday, Franz Liszt his 200th and Erik Bergman his 100th. As usual, the artists include both well-known faces and new ones, primarily from the Nordic countries.
This year’s big attraction, besides the Sounding Letters project, is Eric Ericson’s Chamber Choir, Sweden’s top choir. This year’s musicians include the pianists Ieva Jokubiviciute, Naoko Ichihashi and Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch.
Even though we want to provide our fabulous spectators with something new, whether it be new composers or artists, or new distinguished concert venues or concepts, we also want to keep providing what we consider to be the most important thing for a music festival, something we feel we have succeeded in doing in past years: the best possible music, both of the older variety and the newest of the new, performed by top musicians.
