A tour along narrow winding roads
From Mariehamn you can go for a genuine rural tour along narrow winding roads. Along the way you pass sights such as the Sålis battery, the church of Finström, Tjudö Vineyard, the castle of Kastelholm, the look-out café Uffe på Berget and finally the church of Jomala.
The Mail Route
The Mail Route, which started to be used in the 1600’s, is a route with many winding curves. It stretches all across Åland – from Storby in Eckerö to Hullvik in Vårdö and then farther out in the archipelago and all the way across to the Finnish mainland. Or the opposite way if you set out from Finland. You may give the tour another dimension by combining the drive with a visit to the Mail Route Museum at the Eckerö Mail and Custom’s House. The museum vividly tells about the mail route peasant’s taxing life.
Sights
If you want a destination for your outing, we can recommend sights such as the castle of Kastelholm and the fortress ruins of Bomarsund, or why not the Eckerö Mail and Custom’s House and the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum? In Eckerö, the Degersand sea beach is a suitable outing destination. Here you can go for a swim in the sea and then have a cup of coffee in the café at Degersand’s camping.
Good food in sight
The many restaurants and cafés in Åland can also be the destination for a pleasant ride. For example Stickstugan Hantverk & Café in Järsö, Jan Karlsgården’s Wärdshus & Café in Sund or Pettas Café and bakery in Geta. You may also want to visit Pub Stallhagen at Ålands Bryggeri in Finström and buy genuine Åland beer to have for dinner.
If you want to, you can drive farther out in the archipelago and visit Restaurang Kastören on Kumlinge, Brudhäll Hotell & Restaurang on Kökar or Enighetens Gästhem och Café on Föglö.
Beautiful nature
Pack your own picnic basket or order a readymade basket from Signes Ost & Delikatess. Drive to Herröskatan in Lemland, Ängösund in Lumparland, Hamnsundet in Saltvik or Käringsund fiskeläge in Eckerö and have a picnic by the sea.
