Åland is a pearl for golfing in the Baltic Sea, with great golf courses, good service and that extra something – a pleasant voyage with tax-free shopping as the beginning and the end of the golf trip.
No matter if you travel to Åland from the east or from the west, the island feels different than the other Nordic countries and the golfing season begins already in May and continues until October.
Golfing in Åland is easy to book. A phone call to a travel agency is enough to get everything in the same package; the voyage, accommodation and starting times.
By a sea bay
Golf in Åland is 25 yrs old and much has happened since its unpretentious beginnings with nine holes. Now the Åland golf club has two 18-hole courses with different characters and the establishment is one of the most well-frequented in Scandinavia. The guests praise the pleasant atmosphere and the service – you may for example rent a golf car!
Face lift
The older of the two courses, the Castle Course, is situated near a sea bay with a view of the only medieval castle in Åland. The course has a park character and is generous towards players. A shot gone awry does not have to cost too much.
The course has undergone a major face lift before the upcoming season – for example the bunkers have been rebuilt and furnished with peat edgings in the Scottish style.
The King’s Course is more difficult with narrower fairways and higher hills. The standpoint of which of the courses is best varies among players and members. So the question is – which will be your favourite?
Also for beginners
In Eckerö, on the west coast of Åland, Eckerö Golf features two courses – a short-hole course with 18 holes where players without a green card are welcome if they play with a golfer who has a green card. There is also a long-hole course with 18 holes.
Short distances
There are a lot of accommodations to choose from in Åland. You can stay near one of the courses but if you choose to stay in Mariehamn, where the supply of restaurant and entertainment is higher, it is not more than half an hour with a car to the first tee.
