Sandösunds Camping is situated on one of Åland’s most northerly islands, Vårdö. As of 13 July 2012, the campsite is able to accommodate guests with disability and, what is more, provide several activities suitable for people with disability.
“It’s perfect both for individuals and for group travel, such as school trips,” says Olof Salmi.
Disabled-friendly accommodation
Two terraced buildings, both disabled-friendly, comprising a total of eight apartments, have been built in the grounds. The rooms have been built so that wheelchair users are able to stay somewhere that is as comfortable as possible. There are ramps, wider door frames, larger bathrooms and more space.
“A person using a wheelchair will feel they have plenty of space,” says Olof.
Sandösunds Camping provides half-board arrangements for its guests. This means that breakfast is included in the price and, like dinner, it is served in the restaurant, which has disabled access.
Outdoor activities for wheelchair users
In addition to providing somewhere to stay that is comfortable and where the food is good, there are also various types of outdoor activities that make Sandösunds Camping stand out. Sauna rafts, kayaking, snorkling and fishing are examples of popular activities. The aim is for all activities to be able to be done by everyone, including people with disability. Even now the campsite is able to provided kayaking and saunas for wheelchair users.
“At the moment it’s possible for people to paddle in both single and double kayaks. And we are working on making snorkling possible by next summer. Our shallow sandy beach is quite perfect for that.”

More disabled-friendly campsites
Sandösunds Camping is not alone in providing places to stay for people with disability. The Park Alandia Hotell, Hotell Pommern and Gröna Uddens Camping in Mariehamn and Stormskärs Värdshus also provide accommodation that is suitable for people with disability.
