Visit a Christmas market and experience the warm atmosphere and all the familiar Christmas scents and flavours. Jan Karlsgården’s Christmas Market is the first and biggest of the Christmas markets in Åland. Christmas market in Maritime Quarter as well as in the Market Square are a tradition in Mariehamn. Several smaller Christmas markets will be held in the countryside and in the archipelago, for example a Christmas get-together at Pellas Shipmaster’s Home.
Traditional Little Christmas Market at Jan Karlsgården’s open-air museum
“Little Christmas” – Lillajul – is celebrated on the Saturday before the first day of Advent. Little Christmas is an old Åland tradition that is celebrated with a small Christmas tree, some good Christmas food and little presents for the children. For many Ålander families the celebrations include a visit to the Christmas Market at Jan Karlsgården.
“Little Christmas” market at Jan Karlsgården is Åland’s oldest market and is a highly cherished tradition. It’s an experience in itself just to walk around among the beautiful old buildings in the museum grounds. Both indoors and out there are plenty of market tables stacked with arts and crafts, handmade candles, oat sheaves, Christmas decorations, sweets, home-baked bread, excellent food and much more.
You can take your wish list to Father Christmas in the main building. Round off your visit with some mulled wine in Kastelholm Castle at 10.30 am – 3.30 pm. Entrance to the castle including mulled wine is 2 Euro for adults, children pay 1 Euro.

Christmas market in Mariehamn
There is a Christmas market in the square on Finland’s Independence Day 6 December at 10 am – 4 pm. It’s a tradition in Mariehamn. The traffic is blocked off and the whole of Torggatan between Sittkoffs Galleria and the market square is full of market stalls. You’ll find everything you need for Christmas here.
Christmas market in Maritime Quarter
The annual Christmas market in the Sjökvarteret, Maritime Quarter, in Mariehamn, is held on Saturday–Sunday 15-16 December at 11 am – 4 pm. There is a huge selection of good quality arts and crafts to choose from at the market with Christmas tree, Christmas music and plenty of atmosphere. The whole of the Sjökvarteret, including the museum and artisan shops, is open and you’ll find plenty of excellent Christmas presents among the beautiful Åland arts and crafts on display.
Christmas get-together at Pellas Shipmaster’s Home
Welcome to Christmas get-together at Pellas Shipmaster’s Home Sunday 9 December at 1 – 4 pm. Come and enjoy the christmassy atmosphere and the small-scaled Christmas market with the popular home-baked hemvete bread (usually sold out within the first hour), handicrafts, lottery etc. The café is open and serving e.g. home-made ginger bread and the mulled wine of the Shipmaster’s House.
