Galleries in Mariehamn and Eckerö

There is more besides the Åland Art Museum. Not only is there an excellent gallery in Mariehamn, but also several temporary exhibitions that you ought to visit! Another gem is Ekerö's post house with its gallery.

Start with Galleri Skarpans, an attractive art gallery in Mariehamn, where you can experience some first-rate exhibitions with everything from oil paintings and watercolours to sculptures and textiles. Skarpans is situated just a stone's throw from the town's pedestrian precinct. 

Eckerö's customs and post house usually puts on several good exhibitions every summer.

The most complete collection of rustic wooden boats in the Baltic sea! The Archipelago museum is located in Lappo, Brändö in the northeast archipelago of Åland. It displays traditional Aland island archipelago and fishing culture. In the unique collections are about ten rustic wooden boats - among them the last remaining boat of a type called ”Storbåt”.

  • King Valdemar's Fairway

In the Middle Ages, the Crusades passed by Åland. At that time, the island state was right in the middle of the Scandinavian artery, a sailing channel that these days is called the Valdemar Fairway. The motorway of the times was mentioned in writing in Latin in the 1200s. The fairway runs from Arholma to Åland and the Finnish archipelago. A number of traces of medieval times have been preserved in Åland.
