In summer 2010, a two-hundred-year-old ship was found at the bottom of the Sea of Åland. The wreck turned out to be a treasure trove. Its cargo included 160 bottles of champagne that were almost two centuries old. Some of the bottles were from the Veuve Clicquot champagne house. That’s how Fabienne Moreau first discovered Åland.

Smakbyn is a “Taste Village” taking shape just a stone’s throw from Kastelholm Castle. The first building is being built next to the restaurant Jan Karlsgårdens Värdshus, and is due to be completed by the summer.

This is a suggested cycle ride if you prefer to take it easy along the way. You'll get not just exercise out of it, but also the best of Åland food and drink. You can try out wonderful Åland oddities like bicycle ferries and Ålvados. Reckon on a total of three days and 80 agreeable kilometres.

Åland’s archipelago is filled with white sails in summertime. That’s not surprising, as each of the 6700 islands and countless bays and inlets tries to outshine the rest. One of the people who set sail for Åland last summer is Jussi Heikkilä, who came with his wife Tarja and their sons Elias and Joonas.

Åland is ideal for biking tours. Don't hesitate to bike according to your own schedule but it's easiest to follow the signed biking roads that lead to historical places. We will describe some of them here but there are many more to visit, such as the castle of Kastelholm and the fortress ruins of Bomarsund.

The oldest of the staffed lighthouses in Åland were built in the mid 1800’s. Here, way out at sea, lived the lighthouse-keepers in a harsh environment, far from the rest of the society.
