Protected nature in Åland
There are a total of 44 nature reserves and one seal protection site in Åland, which is equivalent to 1.2% of the total area of the Åland Islands. All reserves are a part of Natura 2000 which is the EU's network of protected nature reserves.
The purpose of the reserves is to protect different natural types and species. Meadow forests and fields demand care with old tried and tested methods if the species are going to thrive. Hay is made in several nature reserves, and branches are taken for drying, to be used as animal food.
Visit a nature reserve
There are many different nature types in the nature reserves of Åland, such as deciduous or pine forests, bogs and swamps, bird skerries and gravel islands. Many of the smaller reserves are not suitable for visits.
On the main island we recommend the larger reserves in Nåtö, Ramsholmen, Prästgärdsnäset and Herrö. Each has a parking lot, informational signs and trails.
The archipelago farmstead Björkör is also worth a visit. In the summer there is a guide available who will show you the reserve by previous arrangement.
Regulations
The nature reserves are protected against damage. In most areas it is prohibited to camp and pick flowers. During some parts of the year admittance is forbidden to some skerries and islands, where sensitive bird species breed.
