Mariehamn is a busy small town where most of the shopping is within reasonable walking distance in the town centre.
In the area around Torggatan you'll find many small shops with much to discover. A shopping spree along the cobblestone pedestrian street, offers everything from clothes and home decorations to books and art handicrafts.
The art handicraft tradition is really alive in Åland. The artisans combine old handicraft techniques with new creativity. In the handicraft shops you'll find art of living and natural material such as wood, textiles, wool, leather, metal, glass and clay.
Handicrafts from Åland are mostly found in the shops in Mariehamn and the Maritime Quarter. Also visit the artisans' own studios and their shops in the countryside in the summer.

Celebrate Christmas twice this year. In Åland Lillajul (“Little Christmas”) is celebrated on the Saturday before the first day of Advent. Lillajul is an old Åland tradition that is celebrated with a small Christmas tree, some good food and little presents for the children. For many Ålander families the celebrations include a visit to the Lillajulmarknaden (“Little Christmas” market) at Jan Karlsgården.
One of Europe’s largest Viking markets will be taking place from 26 to 28 July 2012. The Fibula Association is responsible for its success. Their programme includes various things: they organise summer camps for children, banquets and parties, run courses and are also building a Viking ship.
Shopping for locally produced food at farm shops is becoming increasingly popular. There are plenty of farmers, manufacturers and salespeople in Åland. Choose from lamb sausages, black bread, apple cider, pastries and wine.
Autumn is wonderful on Åland! The Harvest Festival is a joyful event and an essential part of the autumn on Åland.
This will take you straight into the Viking world. When you visit the Viking market in Kvarnbo on 25-27 July, you meet bearded Vikings, serfs in rags and women with jewelry and beautiful costumes.
Lillajul, or "Little Christmas", is an old and popular tradition in Åland. It is always celebrated on the Saturday before the first Advent.
Shop for fashionable clothes and make a contribution to humanity and the environment at the same time. In Åland you can do this at flea markets, vintage outlets and second-hand shops.
Mariehamn is not a big city. Despite that it still surprises with its shopping opportunities. Here you can find many bargains.
