Take a break! The hermit hut on the island Sviskär is an oasis if you´re looking for peace and quiet. Stroll on the rocky beaches, pick berries and mushrooms, take a bath in the wood-heated sauna or just relax by the oil-lamp.

The environment is part of the experience. Among the cafés in Åland there are charming, cosy and old fashioned interiors and also more modern ones.
In the winter only the cafés in Mariehamn are open, but in the high season many more cosy summer cafés open in the countryside and in the archipelago.
Åland pancake is a classic dish with some history. It can be made with both rice porridge or semolina porridge and which ingredient is the original is another story.
The pancake works either as a light lunch or can be enjoyed just with coffee. Cafés serve them with the classic condiments, prune purée and whipped cream. Regular strawberry jam is a good alternative.

Give the heavy backpack a miss and leave the camping stove at home. These days many people opt to live in a hotel and eat at restaurants during their cycling holidays. “Nowadays people like to go on slightly more luxurious cycling holidays,” explains Johan Sjölund, who is involved with arranging cycling trips at the WellComing travel company.
Smakbyn is a “Taste Village” taking shape just a stone’s throw from Kastelholm Castle. The first building is being built next to the restaurant Jan Karlsgårdens Värdshus, and is due to be completed by the summer.
This summer you can choose from a selection of delicious home-baked cakes and pastries at the newly opened Tjudö Café och Gårdsbutik (cafe and farm shop) in Finström on the main island of Åland: a perfect stop if you are cycling, riding a motorbike or are travelling with your family by car. Mari Bamberg does the baking and also serves behind the counter at this charming cafe in the old threshing barn in Tjudö.
Åland has good food on offer all year round. In November the local newspaper counted 53 places to eat in Mariehamn alone. In the summer there are many more than 100 places to eat that are open all around Åland. Enjoy well-prepared dishes with a taste of Åland and the archipelago at any one of the fine restaurants in the island state.
A beautiful view across the Åland Sea and a historically interesting environment makes the island Kobba Klintar, by the inlet to Mariehamn's western harbour, a popular excursion destination.
The Järsö Route is 28 km of easy to travel archipelago road reaching across the beautiful small bridges to Järsö where the sea has a rich birdlife.
Since the 2007 season begun the families Nordlund, Eriksson and Lindström make sure that all their guests enjoy themselves at Degersands Camping by the beautiful sea beach in Degersand.
