Treat yourself to a quiet and relaxing time at a café in Åland. Here you can sample the local delicacy, Åland pancakes, or enjoy coffee with a tasty sandwich or home-baked, heavenly smelling baked goods.

The environment is part of the experience. Among the cafés in Åland there are charming, cosy and old fashioned interiors and also more modern ones.

In the winter only the cafés in Mariehamn are open, but in the high season many more cosy summer cafés open in the countryside and in the archipelago.

Åland pancakes
Åland pancakes are a classic dish with some history. They can be made with both rice porridge or semolina porridge and which ingredient is the original is another story.

The pancakes work either as a light lunch or can be enjoyed just with coffee. Cafés serve them with the classic condiments, prune purée and whipped cream. Regular strawberry jam is a good alternative.

MY GETAWAY
In the summer, my absolutely favourite place is Soltuna café and restaurant and the majestic contours of the rocky hills at Geta Bergen. The view from the restaurant is one of the most exquisite on Åland and gives you a tangible feeling of being on an island in the middle of the sea.

Åland's World Tour Beach Volley Championship – the PAF Open – with 380,000 US dollars in prize money is going to be an absolutely world-class competitive event this year. The competition will be decided at the Arkipelag Arena in central Mariehamn from 18 to 22 August. The American Olympic gold medal winners Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers have confirmed that they will be coming, as have the Brazilian world number ones Larissa and Juliana. Nearly 11,000 tickets have been sold in advance and the PAF Open's Enterprise Day with Lars-Johan Jarnheimer and Risto E.J. Penttilä has attracted about 300 visitors.
