The best of Åland

Riitta-Lea Värelä, Åland Guide and tourist informer, lets us know her favourite spots in the archipelago and the best of what Åland has to offer:
- When you visit Åland you should definitely not miss the museum ship Pommern and the Åland nature. Personally I think that Mariehamn with all it's sights, such as Pommern but also the Maritime Museum and the Maritime Quarter, are the very best that Åland has to offer.

Riitta-Lea also recommends getting personal contact with the locals.
- A visit to an artist's studio or to an artisan, such as Lugnet Keramik in Hammarland, is such an enlightening experience.

Museum Åland
- Other gold nuggets that make me happy are the ship owner's home Pellas and the Önningeby Museum, Riitta-Lea continues. They are small easily approachable museums where you get accessed with only one historic area at a time that children also will enjoy.

If you visit Åland with children, Riitta-Lea also suggests a visit to the Åland Fire Brigade Museum where both young and old alike will have a great time.
- Families can also visit a beach such as Lilla Holmen in Mariehamn, pack a picnic basket and go for an excursion or visit one of the cosy summer cafés.

Nature experiences
Riitta-Lea also wants to emphasise the nature trails and lookout towers in Åland that are suitable for the whole family.

The old small Russian roads around the fortress ruins in Bomarsund are also some of Riitta-Lea's favourite spots.
- There are great picnic places near the sea where you can go for a swim.

If you want to experience even more sea, beautiful nature and smooth bedrock, Riitta-Lea suggests Hammarudda in Jomala or Geta in the northern part of Åland. In Geta is also Hotell Havsvidden located, where you can combine your nature experience with dinner at the hotel's restaurant.

Day Tours
The Åland experience should also include all the beautiful small villages and roads, according to Riitta-Lea. One example of a fine summer tour is the picturesque village Degerby in the archipelago municipality Föglö
- It feels exotic to ride the ferry in the archipelago. Once in the village you can take a walk, visit the old courthouse and inn Enigheten or eat lunch at Restaurant Seagram.
