Safety and risks

Väg, brobank

Åland is one of the least dangerous places in the world. The crime rate is low. But you should always exercise caution in the normal way. As in other places around the Baltic Sea, you should watch out for ticks.

Large amounts of alcohol are consumed on the big ferries between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, which can sometimes result in fights. There have sometimes been reports of pickpockets operating.

Åland vehicle traffic is quiet and there are not many roads. Even so accidents do happen, including accidents involving wild animals and on icy winter roads. Always wear seat belts both when sitting in the front or the back of a car, and always observe the speed limit.

Beware of tick-borne diseases - for more information click on the "Health and medical treatment" link.
