The Önningeby colony - The Åland equivalent of the Danish Skagen colony!
In the summer of 1886, the Finnish landscape painter Victor Westerholm (1860-1919) invited some artist friends to his new home ”Tomtebo” next to the Lemström canal in Åland. This was the take off for the Önningeby colony that during almost 30 years attracted Swedish and Finnish artists (1886-1914). Elin Danielson, Hanna Rönnberg, J.A.G. Acke and Edward Westman were some of the artists that joined  the colony. The artists were accommodated in the stately farmsteads in Önningeby and there were motives in abundance.

The Önningeby museum is a historical art and cultural museum that opened in 1992 in the old stone built barn at the farm Jonesas. In 1999 the museum expanded and the exhibition area enlarged. Apart from turn of the century art there are also objects and pictures that describe the environment where the art originally was created.

The museum also arranges special exhibitions with contemporary art, program evenings with music, poetry and song. In the museum there is a small café and an well assorted museum shop. The museum will arrange coffee or lectures for groups by previous arrangement.
