The Önningeby colony - The Åland equivalence of the Danish Skagen colony!
In the summer of 1886, the Finnish landscape painter Victor Westerholm (1860-1919) invited some artist friends to his new home ”Tomtebo” next to the Lemström canal in Åland. This was the take off for the Önningeby colony that during almost 30 years gathered Swedish and Finnish artists (1886-1914). Took part of the colony did among others Elin Danielson, Hanna Rönnberg, J.A.G. Acke and Edward Westman. The artists were accommodated in the stately farmsteads in Önningeby and there were motifs in abundance.
The Önningeby museum is an art and cultural historical museum that opened in 1992 in the old stone-made barn at the farm Jonesas. In 1999 the museum expanded and the exhibition area multiplied. Apart from turn of the century art here’s also objects and pictures that describes the environment where the art originally was created.
The museum also arranges speciality exhibitions with contemporary art, program evenings with music, poetry and song. In the museum there are a small café and an well-assorted museum shop. The museum will arrange coffee serving and lectures for groups by advance reservation.
