Queen Kristina established a decree, "The Mail route across land and sea" for a regular mail route from Stockholm via Åland to Helsinki in 1638. The road leads even further east along what today is called the "King's road" to St. Petersburg. This road used to be called "The wide beach road" or the "Mail route".

The Mail route across Åland is today a historical route through nine Åland municipalities and it offers many pleasant experiences. A varied nature, places of great natural beauty and historical landmarks along a road that in many places follow the original 1600's route.

Along the signed road there are nice accommodations, cafés and restaurants. You'll travel through the archipelago with the archipelago ferries.

Churches, museums, galleries with art and crafts mixed with vivid theatre and music offers you many possibilities to actively experience your journey. Read more about the mail route by choosing one of the headlines to the left on this page.
