Hotel classification completed
The Åland hotels are classified according the 1-5 star hotel
classification system that is also used by the Swedish Hotel and
Restaurant association (SHR).
-The star system is used all
around the world and it was a natural step for us to follow, says Visit
Åland's chairman Terese Flöjt. Apart from a few modifications, we
follow the same classification that is also in use in Sweden, Denmark,
Iceland and Greenland - and which is also underway in Norway and in the
Baltic countries.
130 criteria set the standard
The classification work in Åland was undertaken in cooperation with SHR.

They do the classification for us and that guarantees a neutral
judgement, says Terese. The classification will then be updated once a
year.
How many stars the hotels will get depends on 130 different criteria.
One star *
For
one star: communal toilet and bath/shower facility for every ten rooms,
washbasin with hot and cold running water in the room, central heating,
breakfast, round the clock admittance. Reasonable standard of
cleanliness. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.
Two stars **
For
two stars: at least 30% of the rooms must have en-suite toilets and
bath/shower facilities. Refreshments available for purchase.
Satisfactory standard of cleanliness. Maintenance standard appropriate
to number of stars.
Three stars ***
For
three stars: en-suite toilet and bathroom, telephone and TV in all
guest rooms, access to guest PC and fax, reception staffed during
daytime, lift, and no-smoking rooms. Satisfactory standard of
cleanliness. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.
Four stars ****
To
be awarded four stars, a hotel must have an à la carte restaurant, room
service, reception staffed 24 hours a day, international TV channels,
at least 25% of guest rooms must have Internet connection, photocopying
facilities, laundry service and certain comfort requirements. Very high
standard of cleanliness. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of
stars.
Five stars *****
The maximum rating
of five stars is awarded to hotels with a pool and/or staffed gym,
and/or staffed sauna with relaxation area. Air conditioning, 100%
Internet connection and safety deposit box in all guest rooms.
Generally luxurious fittings, furnishings and suites. Very high
standard of cleanliness. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of
stars.
