Classification norms for overnight cabins

Since autumn 2006, all overnight cabins in Åland are classified according to a new system based on the classification system for overnight cabins that was introduced in 2004.

Åland was first in Finland with classifying its overnight cabins.
"Visit Åland developed the new classification norms in cooperation with Viking Line and Eckerö Line," says Malin Frantzén in the work groups. "The major plus is that our guests will know what to expect."

Also authorities such as the fire department, police and the municipalities of Åland participated with their expert knowledge.

Simpler accommodations

There are a total of some 250 overnight cabins in Åland. They are mostly located at camping grounds and holiday villages because of the need for service, such as toilet and cooking facilities, nearby. But what is distinctive about an overnight cabin?
- It's a simpler form of accommodation - for example, it lacks heating - that suits especially well sport events, cyclists and other guests that just want to stay one or two nights before they are on their way again. It's simply a clever alternative for a short time stay.

Standard and Standard +

The classification of the overnight cabins will be taken care of by the resellers. To differentiate from the self catering cottages, that are classified according to a 5-star scale, the overnight cottages will be classified either Standard, for cabins with basic requirements and minimum equipment, or Standard + which are slightly more exclusive cabins.

If the overnight cabin is to be marketed by the resellers, the basic requirements must be filled but if there are any shortcomings, steps must be taken to increase the standard.
- We hope that the classification will lead to a higher standard that will guarantee our visitors a certain quality level. The classification also makes it easier for our guests to know exactly what they will get when they make their reservations - it's a realistic classification.

The regularity between which the cabins are classified is two and a half year.
- But we are constantly in contact with each other to make sure that our catalogue and reality match up, says Gunilla Karlsson at Viking Line. The owners can also let us know as soon as they have upgraded their cabins or cottages.
