Travelling to Åland

It is easy to travel to Åland. Transport links to the islands in the middle of the Baltic Sea are good, making it easy to get there from the metropolitan areas of Sweden, Finland or Estonia. Choose between an easy journey by boat or a quicker one by air.

Ferries

If you prefer to travel by ferry, the shortest journey by boat takes just 2 hours from Sweden, whereas it will take you 5 hours from Finland.  The ferries run to Åland about 30 times a day every day. On board you can eat well, enjoy the sea view and make tax-free purchases in the shops.

The Viking Line and Silja Line shipping lines leave for Mariehamn or Långnäs in Åland several times a day from Stockholm or Kapellskär, as well as from Åbo or Helsinki.

From Sweden you can also travel on Eckerö Linjen ferries. It takes just two hours to get from Grisslehamn in Sweden to Eckerö in Åland. If you are travelling from Estonia you would opt for Tallink from Tallinn.

Archipelago ferry from Finland

Another option if you are travelling from Finland is to take one of the Ålandstrafiken archipelago ferries, especially appropriate if you are planning to visit one of the six Ålander island municipalities. The archipelago ferries leave from Osnäs or Galtby and take you through the islands in the archipelago to Hummelvik in Vårdö or Långnäs in Lumparland on the main island, Fasta Åland.

To Åland by air

A speedy alternative to ferry travel is to go to Åland by air. Travelling time with AirÅland is just half an hour from Stockholm/Arlanda, or under an hour from Helsinki/Vanda or Åbo in Finland. When you reach Åland the international airport is only a five-minute car journey from central Mariehamn.

Booking your trip

You can get one of Åland's travel agencies to arrange a package trip for you that includes travel, accommodation and several excursions. Together you can work out an Åland holiday that will match your requirements exactly.
