Some information about the Lemström Canal with its bridge might be needed when planning your sailing trip in Åland. Lemström Canal was built in 1882 in order to connect the sea inlet east of Mariehamn to Lumparn which is a popular sea route.
Opening hours of the bridge
There is a bridge over the canal with a vertical clearance of 3.3 meters. During the peak season the bridge is opened for boats every even hour daytime according to the following schedule.
In 2018, daily
28 April – 18 May at 9.00–17.00
19 May – 8 June at 9.00–19.00
9 June – 12 August at 8.00–22.00
13 August – 23 September at 9.00–17.00
The bridge is opened every even hour for approximately 10 minutes, e.g. from 12 o’clock noon til 12.10 pm. For the bridge opening you will need to be waiting by the canal in good time. Before the last opening of the day at 17.00, 19.00 or 22.00 o’clock the bridge is opened, if needed, 10 minutes prior to the normal opening time.
In the spring (after breaking up of ice until 27 April) or in the autumn (24 September – 31 November 2018) the bridge can be opened daytime Mon–Thu at 8.00–16.00 and Fri at 8.00–14.00 upon agreement with the bridge ward at the latest 2 hours before, phone + 358 18 33731. The bridge opening takes always place even hours.

Good to know:
- There are traffic lights and information about the bridge opening at the entrance to the canal.
- Your boat’s mast height may not exceed 3.3 m in order to drive through without a bridge opening.
- Max. speed in the area is 9 km/h.
