King’s course in beautiful surroundings

Åland Golf Club, with its fabulous location on a headland between two inlets by Kastelholm Castle in Sund, was founded in 1983 and has two 18-hole courses as well as a 6-hole par 3 course. King Gustav Vasa used to hunt elk in the area in the 1500s.

The tricky and demanding Kungsbanan course is located in a naturally beautiful forest environment. The holes vary, alternating between the more open and the tighter variety, which provides for an enjoyable sporting challenge.

The Prinsessan short hole course has six par-3 holes and the full-sized greens are perfect if you want to sharpen your short game.

The park-like Slottsbanan course close to Slottsundet Bay was the first course to be opened; it is under renovation and will have been modernised by the summer of 2020. It will be even more fun to play the 18-hole course now that the playing surfaces have been improved and the view over Kastelholm Castle is even better.

The clubhouse – the centre of the facility

The clubhouse is at the centre of the facility. This is where the reception is, as well as clean changing rooms, showers and sauna, not to mention a well-stocked golf shop and restaurant, famous for its excellent fish dishes and affordable home-cooked lunches

There are large practice greens for putting and a green where you can practise both your approach and bunker shots next to the clubhouse. The golf club welcomes approximately 8,000 guests per year, who play about 18,000 green fee rounds.

Chris Waldron is the head pro and has many years’ experience of golf instruction. He provides tailor-made instruction based on every player’s abilities and time frame. Beginners’ courses and courses to prepare for green card certification are also available in Åland.

Combine with other activities

Going on company golf events is a popular way to combine excellent courses with the possibility of alternating playing golf with activities such as sport fishing, brewery tours, drinks tastings, cooking classes or conferences. Kastelholm also has the Smakbyn, which includes a licensed restaurant/pub, distillery and conference facilities. The Åland Convention Bureau will be pleased to help you, at no charge, to put together your conference!

Family members who accompany you on your golfing holiday will find plenty of activities in the vicinity of the course. There are often children’s activities organised in Jan Karlsgården and Kastelholm Castle, and there is a shallow beach in the Bomarsund fortress area. You can also swim in Åland’s Sports Centre, which is a ten-minute drive from the golf course – perfect for those cloudier days.

Travel agents in Åland provide affordable and attractive golf packages, which include travel, accommodation and a green fee with reserved start times. Åland is a popular travel destination when it comes to golf and, if you want the best choice of start times, you will have to make your reservation in good time.

Accommodation near the golf courses

Klingbergs Stugor are located near the Kungsbanan and are a popular choice of accommodation for many golfers. The six cabins and the more exclusive Villa Marina are situated approximately 2 km from the golf club’s reception area. There is a beach sauna by the cabins and catering is available.

Kastelholms Gästhem is also situated a short distance from the golf courses and is popular among golfers. The guesthouse has double rooms with 13 additional beds in each room, and dormitories, and serves breakfast. There are several other accommodation options further away.

Should you come to Åland in your own boat, Kastelholm guest harbour is within rowing distance opposite the Slottbanan.

Entertainment and local food

No doubt there are people who will want to check out the nightlife in Mariehamn after a day out on the golf course. There are several hotels to choose from, for example the four-star, environmentally certified Hotell Arkipelag, with its nightclub and view over the marina in Österhamn. The totally renovated, environmentally certified four-star Park Alandia Hotell, close to the Esplanaden in the centre, has a delightful restaurant and pleasant pub with live entertainment, and the three-star Hotell Adlon by the ferry terminal in Västerhamn has a pool and sauna section as well as a pizzeria and sports bar. You will find more hotels and other accommodations here.
