Golf course on the sunny side of Åland
Eckerö Golf with its 18-hole golf course is located in western Åland, close to a ferry harbour, a variety of accommodation establishments and restaurants. It offers exciting golf challenges for both beginners and more experienced golfers in beautiful surroundings with easy access.
Eckerö Golf opened for business in 1995 with a 9-hole golf course and driving range and the 18-hole golf course was opened in 2014. There was a change of ownership before the 2015 season: the course was renovated and new bunkers and beautiful water hazards were put in to make the playing experience more interesting and challenging.
The driving range is centrally located and has ten tees. Eckerö Golf’s services include access to changing rooms, showers and toilets. The club is also able to offer light refreshments. There are gloves, balls and other equipment to buy. Golf clubs and carts can be hired.
The ‘front nine’ (holes 1–9) have an open feel and are located in the Åland agricultural landscape. The ‘back nine’ (holes 10–18) are a forest course, framed by pine forest and marshland. The going is easy.
The course has four different tees so that everyone can have a good golfing experience. This means that beginners, juniors and other short-striking players have a golf course where they can get to the green with the right number of strokes. Equally, the course is suitable for intermediate golfers as well, and it even provides a challenge for elite golfers, especially the last nine forest holes.
On the sunny side of Åland
Eckerö Golf is situated only 10 minutes by car from the ferry harbour in Eckerö Berghamn and 30 minutes from Mariehamn.
Eckerö is surrounded by the sea on all sides – this is where three horizons meet! It has both stunning sandy beaches and smooth red granite rocks. If you want to watch the sun go down over the sea, you’re in the right place. Eckerö has the most sunshine hours in the whole of Åland and Åland has more sunshine hours than Gotland.
History and sandy beaches
You can trace the history of the Viking voyages, the Postrodden sailing and rowing race commemorating the risky postal service over the Sea of Åland when Eckerö was at the frontier between Tsarist Russia and the Swedish mainland. Visit Eckerö Post and Customs House, which is open from the beginning of May till the beginning of September. There are often art exhibitions and the entry is free.
Eckerö has many activities that are suitable for all ages. Käringsunds Game Safari, Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum and the Smart Park family park, located right next to the golf course, are just to name a few of them. Did you know that the best beaches in the whole Åland can be found in Eckerö? Degersand is a must on a sunny day and Sandviken by the Post and Customs House as well as the beach in Käringsund are a couple of the most child-friendly beaches. A tip is to ask some locals for their best hidden gems.
In Eckerö there is a wide selection of cabins, guesthouses, camping sites, cafés, restaurants, holiday villages and hotels, where you can stay overnight. For example, Bergbo stugor and bistro is located a stone’s throw from the golf course. Alternatively, if you would prefer to stay right by the sea, there are camping sites, hotels and cottages for example in Käringsund and Degersand. Are you going to Åland in your own boat? Then you can stay overnight at Käringsund guest marina.
